Chains

I love this! In 2 Timothy 2:8-9, Paul is looking at the end of his life and he knows it! He is in a nasty hole in the ground, totally chained up, pretty much abandoned by the vast majority of his family and friends in the faith. Here he is in the epitome of dirtiness, loneliness, desperation, pain. He has every right to be sulking, to be upset about life, to decide that God’s done using him and it’s just time to wait out the rest of the little time he has left on this earth.

But no. The Gospel is STILL his NUMBER ONE priority.

Read up:

8 Remember Jesus Chris, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. 10 BUT GOD’S WORD IS NOT CHAINED!

What beauty! This really excites me. Sometimes Paul is put on a pedestal, but the guy did not have mystical powers or any extra strengths that helped him deal with all the distress he experienced. He just had Jesus. There’s no secret formula, there isn’t a magical discipline. There is just Jesus.

God’s Word cannot be chained. You can chain the body, you can even kill the body….but God’s Word goes out anyway. Killing Jesus, killing the apostles, killing all the martyrs from decades past could not hush the Word of God and the Gospel Truth. Thus is the case now and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
